Web standards are your friend
Any web designers out there take note: if you find yourself in the position of designing a high-profile web site for one of the world’s largest retail companies, the existence of which is likely to make international news, make sure you test it with more than just the browser that happens to be forced onto you pre-installed on your desktop PC.
According to figures a little over 80% of site visits are still Internet Explorer. That’s a huge majority. But it also means that 20% of visits (maybe more depending on the demographic of your site) are from non-Microsoft browsers and by all reports that figure is growing monthly. Can you really afford to ignore (in fact, actively discourage) one fifth of your customers? If you were running a shop, would you turn away one in every 5 customers at the door?
Of course you wouldn’t. Test, test, test people. The browsers are all free these days so there’s really no excuse. And this is exactly what web standards were made for.
