If a .ie domain is not renewed on time, it will eventually enter a redemption period. During this stage, restoring the domain requires an additional recovery fee, in line with the policy introduced by the IE Domain Registry on 1 August 2025.
It’s easy to forget renewal dates from time to time. Fortunately, even if a domain expires, there is still a limited opportunity to recover it before it becomes available for someone else to register. This recovery window is known as the Redemption Period.
How the Expiry Process Works
When a .ie domain expires, it goes through several stages before it is permanently released.
45-Day Grace Period
For the first 45 days after the expiry date, the domain can be renewed normally. During this time, there are no additional penalties or recovery fees.
Redemption Period (~30 Days)
If the domain is not renewed during the grace period, it enters the redemption stage. At this point, the domain will no longer function for websites or email, but it can still be restored by paying a restore fee along with the standard renewal cost.
Pending Delete (~5 Days)
After the redemption stage ends, the domain moves into a pending delete phase lasting around five days. During this period, the domain cannot be renewed or restored. Once this stage ends, the domain is released and becomes available for anyone to register.
Restore Fees
Since the introduction of the redemption policy by the IE Domain Registry in August 2025, restoring a .ie domain during the redemption period requires payment of a restore fee in addition to the normal renewal cost.
This fee covers the administrative process required to recover a domain that has already progressed beyond the initial renewal window.
How to Avoid Redemption Fees
The easiest way to avoid additional costs is to ensure your domain is renewed before it expires. A few simple steps can help prevent missed renewals:
• Enable automatic renewal for your domains
• Make sure your billing and contact details are up to date
• Set a calendar reminder ahead of the renewal date
Taking these precautions helps ensure your domain stays active without interruption.
What to Do If Your Domain Has Expired
Within 45 days of expiry
You can simply renew the domain as usual with no additional fees
During the redemption period
The domain can still be recovered, but a restore fee plus the renewal cost will apply.
During pending delete
Unfortunately, recovery is no longer possible at this stage. Once the pending delete period ends, the domain will be released and may be registered by anyone.
Protecting Your Domain
Your domain name is often a key part of your brand, business, and online presence. Keeping track of renewal dates and enabling automatic renewals can help ensure it remains secure and under your control.
Planning ahead can save both time and unnecessary costs while keeping your online services running smoothly
